Black Mountain bought the long-time accounting firm that I really liked. I worked with the same accountant for 4 years. After getting a letter that my prep fee would be greatly increased for the next tax period I switched to TurboTax. TurboTax found the QBI deduction for my partnership and just on a whim I went back through our last 4 years of taxes. The first two years were fine - but Black Mountain missed the QBI deduction for the next two years. I had to file an amended return to get the several thousand dollars we paid as a result of this mistake refunded. I also saw that they had listed a $70k+ pension in one box on our 1040, which we don't have and have never had. They did not include it in subsequent calculations so it didn't affect anything, but it was another sloppy mistake.

My husband and I were very happy with our previous tax accountant. He left Black Mountain tax and retired . Since then the service has been OK for the last two years. Covid is some to blame as we were not allowed to meet in person. We have not been able to get any of our physical documents we turned in to them. However, this past weekend we got a letter informing us we have been dumped by Black Mountain Tax and Consulting.
My parents were dumped as well! They are seniors who now have to find a new person to do their taxes. We are all disappointed.

We had a very strange experience with this firm. After they took over from the previous owner, the accountant at Black Mountain determined that our taxes - personal and business - had been done incorrectly for years. The sale of our business a few years ago was especially mishandled. They determined that we owed nearly $18,000 in back taxes, and they did a great job working through all of it for us. Katherine was very patient with and responsive to my questions. Once all the dust settled, I paid my bill to Black Mountain and promptly got a "best of luck to you in the future, but we've decided that we don't want you as a client anymore" letter in the mail. Then I got a letter from the IRS today saying "you owe us another $1,900", and now I'm being ghosted by Black Mountain. Is the $1,900 real? Is that due to a correctable mistake? I've never known a professional services firm to abandon cooperative, paying clients with no explanation.

I started working with Black Mountain Tax and Consulting a few years ago. My accountant, who I had worked with since the early 1990s, was ready to retire and she transitioned me to Black Mountain Tax and Consulting. I have been working with Ben Reynolds at Black Mountain and have been very pleased. The transition was very smooth. Ben is great to work with. He is professional, always available, helpful and responsive. I have had several questions for him, some a bit more unique, and he has done a great job giving me good answers. He is also very good at explaining any items I have questions about. It has been a pleasure working with Ben and I hope to continuing the partnership with Black Mountain Tax & Consulting for many more years to come.

Black Mountain Tax and Consulting and Ben Reynolds:

I have been a client of Black Mountain Tax and Consulting (or their predecessor) since the early 1990’s. I have been a “remote client” of the firm since moving from Fort Collins, Colorado to Arizona in 1998 and then to Texas in 2012 where I currently reside. I cannot say enough positive things about the firm or the professionals and team members with whom I have worked. Most recently, following the retirement of the tax consultant I had worked with for many years, I had the pleasure of continuing my partnership with the firm working with Mr. Ben Reynolds. Once again, a transition in consultant was accomplished without a glitch. Throughout several such transitions (always due to retirement) I have been impressed with the seamless transition process and constant, if not improving, quality. This speaks volumes to the systems Black Mountain has developed and maintained over the years. Ben was a pleasure to work with. Ben was timely, responsive, detailed, accurate, professional and most helpful. I can (and have) wholeheartedly recommend this firm, without hesitation or qualification, and I look forward to many more years of a very productive and professional partnership with Black Mountain Tax and Consulting.

We are among the, apparently, many who received a letter from Black Mountain Tax today informing us that “our needs would be better served by another firm!” We had been clients of Tom Hoogendyk for many years and followed him to Black Mountain when he merged with that entity. After Tom retired from his accounting practice we continued with Black Mountain with the person who was assigned even though the company sent no notification that Tom had retired. While we weren’t allowed to meet in person due to COVID restrictions we trusted that she would handle our tax preparation in the manner we had become accustomed to, which she did. We presented our documents in a timely manner, received our returns on time and paid our bill immediately. We are perplexed, and angry, about this situation. We believe this a very unprofessional action. We have no idea why Black Mountain is unable, or unwilling, to continue preparing our returns. I would not recommend this company to anyone.

We received the same, very poorly written letter "dismissing us from their business" without explanation. The advice we received from a former employee (we were told he was no longer with the firm!) was marginal and the fee was twice what our new CPA charged. Further, for the first time in over 50 years we have had fraudulent tax returns filed. While is apparent our personal information could be obtained by sophisticated hackers, I cannot help but think that BM might have something to do with this issue. The Colorado Department of Revenue does not see their job to chase down persons who are filing fraudulent claims, rather suggested contacting the police who do not see this as a priority.
End result, I would stay away from this firm.

Similarly, we had our taxes done for 20 years by Tom Hogendyk and never had an issue. This year with the new team, due to their error our taxes had to be amended. We have not seen our refund check which we are now responsible to hunt down on our own. The "we feel your interests would be better served elsewhere" dropping us as clients letter was strange and unprofessional. Katherine is professional and pleasant to work with however, we wished we had left when Tom did.
