This property management company with held security deposit based in the premise that notice wasn’t given within 30 days. Notice was given per phone call on 7/26 to vacate by 8/19. Full rent was paid up until
Sept 1st.
The representative I spoke to ( assistant to manager) gave the reason that the deposit wasn’t honored because she moved out on 8/19 not September 1st. I ask to speak to the manager to clarify, the assistant denied that request.
During the final walk through on 8/19 the inspector said the deposit would be returned, she recorded the new forwarding address. She also remarked they would have ample time to prepare the apartment for rental on Sept 1st.
The capital city representative that I contacted said a letter and explanation had been mailed to the forwarding address, however nothing was received. The only thing received was a text message denying the deposit return.
My conclusion is that this management group are experts in their job. They have expertise in taking advantage of well intended renters.
The decision to move was made due the undesirable, poorly maintained and unsafe apartment complex.
It was no surprise that Capital City conducts their business in unsavory business practices.

Horrible people to rent from we moved into a place looked pretty nice stayed for 2 years place was absolutely falling apart by the time we were moving out. I'm almost tempted to call Polk county on them to get that house condemned no one should be living in that house ever again. Unless they plan on fixing the foundation that's cracking also the upstairs ceiling was caving in so you might fall into the living room. Called them once because the floor was coming up where the carpet was they came in and just used a few nails and called it good. If I could give it zero stars I would. My kids could build a better house than that piece of trash.

Capital city properties. Is trash. They don't care about their tenants. They only care about the money. The parking lot has big potholes. They have not fixed since I moved there and since I moved out not to mention been with them for 3 years . They took my deposit for non cleaning of apartment when It was cleaned . And I have video of apartment cleaned and no damages They are slumlords. One apartment. I lived in had mold in it. I contacted the city because It didn't get fixed . Even worse the washer and dryer are broke on every floor ! , so don't rent from them. Save your money !

Capital City acquired the building in West Des Moines that was living in at the beginning of 2022. Never had an issue with them the 5 months I was renting through them. It looks like they ended up making some much needed improvements to the building as well, and pricing is still affordable for what it is.

Horrible people to rent from ! Did a walk through before I moved out they said everything was good and clean . Now they kept my deposit and charged me an extra $200 for cleaning fees . They don’t fix anything when asked too either !
